Overseas Student Health Cover & COVID-19
Dear international students,
Many of you are having questions regarding their OSHC related to their student visa, during this COVID-19 crisis.
I contacted my partner, AHM OSHC, to get answers to the most common questions.
If you are covered by another provider than AHM OSHC, please double check with them first.
However, all providers are pretty much covering the same thing and the same way.
Therefore, this article might help you.
Things to know: Your cover includes benefits towards medical services provided by a doctor, that are listed in the government’s Medicare Benefits Schedule (MBS). The MBS is a list of medical services and corresponding fees.
I AM NO LONGER COMING TO AUSTRALIA, CAN I CANCEL MY STUDENT INSURANCE? IF SO, HOW?
If a student is unable to arrive in Australia at all, they would need to show proof of either a visa withdrawal/rejection, or an international movement record, and email the documentations to oshc@ahm.com.au
I CANNOT GO or RETURN TO AUSTRALIA DUE TO A TRAVEL PROHIBITION AND MY COURSE BEGINS – WHAT DO I NEED TO DO?
Contact your agent to fill out a “student deferral form” and get a new Confirmation Of Enrolment. Once received, update your insurance policy start and end date.
IF I HAVE COVID-19 SYMPTOMS AND WISH TO CONSULT A GENERAL PRACTICIONER, WILL THIS BE COVERED BY MY OSHC COVERAGE?
If you have COVID-19 symptoms, do not leave your house. First, you must call 1800 022 222 and talk about your symptoms.
You will be advised about what to do and if you need to consult a GP, AHM OSHC pays 100% of the MBS fee.
ARE COVID-19 PATHOLOGY TESTS SUPPORTED BY AHM OSHC?
AHM OSHC pays 85% of the MBS fee for medical services provided out-of-hospital (for example, specialists, pathology and x-rays), except for Assisted reproductive services. So make sure the test is not taken at the hospital.
WILL I BE COVERED IF I HAVE TO GO TO THE HOSPITAL?
Whether it’s a stomach pain, broken bone or COVID-19, you are covered the same as you always would be. You may still incur out-of-pocket expenses above the amount we pay.
Where possible before booking or receiving treatment, you should always call your insurance to ask about the benefits you can expect to receive and any out-of-pocket expenses you might incur. It’s also a good idea to confirm any out-of-pocket expenses before admission with the hospital and doctors (including the surgeon, assistant surgeon and anaesthetist).
AM I COVERED FOR PRESCRIPTION DRUGS THAT WILL HELP ME RECOVER COVID-19?
AHM OSHC provides benefits towards the cost of eligible prescription medicines. You will be required to pay a contribution towards the cost of each eligible medicine item before we pay any benefits.
AM I COVERED IN THE EVENT OF REPATRIATION?
Repatriation is generally not covered, unless under rare situations. However, for the most part, it is not covered.
CAN I BENEFIT FROM HELP IN PSYCHOLOGY?
Psychology sessions are covered with a mental health plan from a General Practicioner covering 85% of the MBS (Medicare Benefits Schedule) fee.
